The Rabies Laboratory is one of the highest volume rabies serology centers in the world for both humans and animals, handling over 100,000 samples each year. The lab performs titer testing of humans and animals for verification of vaccine status as well as verifying rabies antibody status for animals traveling to destinations requiring proof of vaccination. The lab has extensive experience in measuring rabies antibodies by the Fluorescent Antibody Virus Neutralization (FAVN) test and Rapid Fluorescent Focus Inhibition Test (RFFIT) and Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). In addition, the lab is the only rabies diagnostic lab for the state of Kansas that tests brain tissue for animals suspected of having rabies and coordinating closely on all positive results with Kansas Department of Health and Environment. The Rabies Laboratory meets quality monitoring standards of the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments as well as numerous State departments of health and the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians. The lab also welcomes and engages in collaborations involving testing new pharmaceuticals, vaccine development and other research studies with academic and commercial partners.
