Comparative and Experimental Pathology Service (CEPS)

The Kansas State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (KSVDL) and Department of Diagnostic Medicine/Pathobiology at Kansas State University provide a Comparative and Experimental Pathology Service (CEPS) at Kansas State University that offers expertise in laboratory animal and experimental animal pathology to investigators and clinicians within and outside of Kansas State University. Our main objective is to facilitate and provide quality and time-bound pathology services to investigators and clinicians.

The CEPS pathologists have a wide background and can collaborate on projects involving infectious disease, cancer biology, neurobiology, treatment and vaccine research, stem cell research, emerging diseases, hereditary diseases, aging and degenerative diseases, and others. In addition, we have broad expertise with a number of species including laboratory animals and domestic animals. In conjunction with the KSVDL Histology and Immunohistochemistry Laboratory we can process projects and provide examination of routine histology, immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization. We also have digital pathology services, which include whole slide brightfield or fluorescent scanning that will produce images that can be examined using software to quantify receptor expression, infectious agents, or other targets of interest.

Our goal is to be an integral part of the research team so that your research has a strong foundation for the pathology component of the project, which will support the project as a whole. Involving CEPS pathologists at the planning and grant writing stages of your project will result in your research team accumulating the best data to answer the objectives of your particular study. We can assist with grant writing and project design through:
  • Selection of proper samples and controls
  • Assistance with budgeting for pathology services.
  • Selection of appropriate methodologies to accumulate pathology related data
  • Provision of information on animal models
  • Provision of information on species differences and possible background lesions that could obscure results
  • Proper identification of species differences and recognize artifacts that may occur secondary to sample processing that can be mistaken for lesions

The KSVDL Histology and Immunohistochemistry Laboratory is a fully functional laboratory that can meet your pathology processing needs.
