Canine Influenza Outbreak Update: 5/18/15
The current outbreak of Canine Influenza began in the Chicago area, in April. Cases have been reported in dogs across the Midwest. Most recently, dogs with influenza were reported in Texas and Georgia.
Although no positive dogs have been reported in Kansas, KSVDL urges veterinarians and pet owners to remain vigilant. We are continuing to test canine samples from across the Midwest. We will update this page as more results are available. To date we have not tested any positive dogs.
We are excited to offer sequencing for any influenza positive samples. Please see below for more information about sequencing and other diagnostic testing offered at KSVDL.
Influenza (Universal) Real-Time PCR:$31
Influenza testing is done via our Influenza (Universal) PCR which tests for all Influenza A subtypes. It will detect both the older canine H3N8 strain and the new H3N2 strain as well as any new or emerging strains. This is valuable as Influenza virus is always changing even in the midst of an outbreak. In order to identify the subtype of influenza virus detected, sequencing is required.
Canine Respiratory Panel Temporary Price Decrease: $70
KSVLD’s Canine Respiratory Panel also includes PCR testing for the pathogens Mycoplasma spp., Bordetella bronchiseptica, Canine Adenovirsue-2, Canine Herpesvirus-1, Canine Distempervirus, Influenza A virus (see above), Canine Parainfluenza virus-3, Canine Respiratory Coronavirus and Canine Coronavirus.
Genetic Sequencing:$75
Sequencing can be requested on samples that are positive by PCR for Universal Influenza. Sequencing will differentiate between the previously common H3N8 and the new H3N2 subtypes. It will also subtype any new or emerging subtypes.
Sample collection guidelines:
Preferred specimens for Canine Respiratory Disease testing:
Nasal swabs (collected within 3-4 days after onset of clinical signs) in viral transport medium or, saline. Other acceptable samples include tracheal-bronchial lavage and respiratory tissue. All the samples must be shipped overnight on ice packs.
Note: Viral transport media is not recommended for culture of any bacterial agents, other than those listed on the label.
