Bovine Theileria Positive Areas Identified

By Dr. Gregg A. Hanzlicek

The Asian longhorned tick, the primary insect vector associated with Theileria orientalis ikeda, has recently been found as far west as northwestern Oklahoma. The positive identification occurred in a county adjoining Labette County Kansas.

As this tick continues to move westward, the likelihood of beef cattle theileria infections being identified in more U.S. geographical areas will increase.

The map below indicates the origin of T. orientalis ikeda positives tests reported by KSVDL in 2024. Because anaplasmosis and theileriosis present clinically similar, we have developed a PCR that targets both organisms in one reaction:

Bovine Theileria and Anaplasma PCR (MDL-7130)

  • Samples: whole blood (purple top) or fresh spleen
  • Pooling is available: pools up to 5:
  • These must be collected and submitted individually. The lab will pool before testing.
bovine theileria positives

We have had several cases where anaplasmosis was very possible, but test results were negative. Subsequent test results for theileria were positive.

We recommend if in areas east of the Missouri: Kansas line that both anaplasma and Theileria be ruled out. This is especially important in cases concerning less than ideal treatment responses or when young animals are observed with anaplasma-like symptoms.
