Bovine Abortion Workups
By Dr. Gregg A. Hanzlicek
Completing antibody titers on small groups of cows in a herd experiencing fetal attrition can be a great tool to rule-out IBR, BVD I, BVD II, and Leptospirosis. The interpretation of the results requires knowledge of the vaccine history, and an understanding of what titer level is required to reach the field exposure concern level.
We have had several reports of IBR titers as high and 4096 being interpreted as normal vaccine background levels. As indicated in the histogram below, data covering many years suggests that titers from 512 to >4096 are relatively rare and should be an indication of recent IBR exposure, if considering the other titers levels and vaccine history.
Interpreting titers is not always simple and can be very confusing.
We are always very happy to help with the interpretation of this valuable tool if needed!
